We provide cardiac care to children in several communities across BC.
The BC Children's Hospital Provincial Partnerships program has been bringing cardiac care closer to home for pediatric cardiology patients since 1995.
These patients are typically children and youth:
- with congenital heart defects that have had heart surgery and require long-term follow up
- with heart conditions that do not require surgery and can be managed in their home communities with the team's support
- children who are referred by their local pediatricians for new diagnosis.
A team compromised of a pediatric cardiologist, nurse clinican and an echocardiographer travel throughout BC and the Yukon to provide services to these communities:
- Prince George
- Fort St. John
- Williams Lake
This program provides families with the same level of service they can expect from BC Children's Hospital without the added stress of traveling to the Lower Mainland, truly bringing care closer to home for the children of BC and the Yukon.
Our education services
During the 2013-2014 year, the team made 23 trips across the province, held 59 clinic days, hosted 751 consultations, and performed 544 echocardiograms using a portable echocardiograph machine genorously donated by the BC Children's Hospital Foundation.
The team also provides Continuing Medical Education lectures and nursing educational sessions to the local health care professionals in conjunction with the clinics.
